Ingredients
Scale
For the Filling:
- 2 1/2 pounds apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
For the Crust:
- 1 double pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until the apples are well coated.
- Assemble the Pie: Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Pour the apple mixture into the crust and dot with butter. Place the second crust over the top, trimming and crimping the edges. Vent the top crust, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake: Bake for 45–50 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Cover edges with foil if browning too quickly. Let cool for 2 hours before slicing.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add vanilla extract or apple brandy to the filling.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
