Description

These Baklava Muffins are a delightful twist on the classic Middle Eastern dessert, combining a moist, spiced muffin base with a crunchy walnut filling and a generous drizzle of honey. Perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack, they offer the rich flavors of cinnamon, nuts, and honey in an easy-to-make muffin form.

Ingredients

Scale

Walnut Filling

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter

Muffin Batter

  • 1 cup + 7 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons buttermilk

Topping

  • 1/2 cup honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease if not using liners to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Walnut Filling: In a small bowl, combine chopped walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter. Mix until the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated and set aside.
  3. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar to ensure they are evenly distributed.
  4. Combine the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the egg, melted unsalted butter, and buttermilk until smooth and fully combined.
  5. Make the Batter: Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Gently fold together until just combined; the batter will be lumpy. Avoid overmixing to keep the muffins tender.
  6. Assemble the Muffins: Spoon a small amount of muffin batter into each muffin cup, filling about one-third full. Add a scant tablespoon of walnut filling on top of the batter. Cover the filling with more muffin batter until the cups are about two-thirds full. Sprinkle any remaining walnut filling evenly over the top.
  7. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until the muffins are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Drizzle with Honey: Remove the muffins from the oven and transfer them on their paper liners to a wire rack to cool slightly. While still warm, drizzle each muffin generously with honey for sweetness and added moisture.
  9. Serve: Allow the Baklava Muffins to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature for a delicious treat.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep muffins tender and light.
  • Using paper liners makes it easier to remove muffins and keeps cleanup simple.
  • Feel free to substitute walnuts with pecans or pistachios for variation.
  • Honey drizzle can be adjusted based on sweetness preference.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
