For the Sloppy Joes:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For Serving:
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil.
- Cook ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5–6 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add vegetables: Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet, and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Make sauce: Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
- Toast buns: Meanwhile, butter and toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or under a broiler until golden.
- Assemble: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- This mixture can also be served over rice, baked potatoes, or even nachos.
