A classic and easy recipe for homemade sloppy joes that are perfect for a quick and delicious weeknight dinner. Made with ground beef, onions, peppers, and a flavorful sauce, these sloppy joes are sure to be a hit with the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sloppy Joes:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Serving:

  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil.
  2. Cook ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5–6 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add vegetables: Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet, and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
  4. Make sauce: Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens.
  6. Toast buns: Meanwhile, butter and toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or under a broiler until golden.
  7. Assemble: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • This mixture can also be served over rice, baked potatoes, or even nachos.
