Description

This orange chicken recipe is better than takeout, with crispy fried chicken coated in a flavorful orange sauce. It’s a popular Chinese dish made at home with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

For Garnish:

  • sliced green onions
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Season chicken with salt and pepper. Dip in cornstarch, then in beaten eggs. Fry until golden brown.
  2. Make the Sauce: Combine orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugars, garlic, and ginger in a saucepan. Simmer, then thicken with cornstarch slurry.
  3. Finish the Dish: Toss fried chicken in sauce. Serve over rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, double fry the chicken.
  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice for best flavor.
