Description

A comforting and hearty Biscuits and Gravy Casserole that layers flaky biscuit dough with savory sausage gravy, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a satisfying breakfast or brunch, this easy casserole combines seasoned breakfast sausage, creamy gravy, and optional cheddar cheese, making it a family favorite and a crowd-pleaser for any morning gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Biscuit and Toppings

  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until it is browned and crumbly. Do not drain the fat as this adds flavor to the gravy.
  3. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour evenly over the browned sausage and stir well to coat. Cook for one minute to remove raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Add garlic powder, black pepper, salt, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Let the gravy simmer gently for 4 to 5 minutes until it thickens to a creamy consistency. Remove from heat.
  4. Prepare the Biscuit Layer: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Place half of these pieces loosely in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, creating an even layer.
  5. Assemble the Casserole: Pour the warm sausage gravy evenly over the bottom layer of biscuit pieces. If desired, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the gravy layer.
  6. Add Remaining Biscuits: Scatter the remaining biscuit dough pieces over the top to cover the cheese and gravy layer.
  7. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, until the biscuit pieces turn golden brown and are cooked through.
  8. Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired for a pop of color and freshness.

Notes

  • Use spicy sausage for an extra kick of flavor.
  • This casserole is great for make-ahead brunches—assemble the night before and bake fresh in the morning.
  • Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a delicious creamy texture and flavor.
  • For a lighter version, substitute whole milk with 2% or use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage.
