Ingredients
Scale
Salisbury Steaks
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for searing)
Mushroom Gravy
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Make the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, grated onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined without overmixing. Form into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties about ¾ inch thick.
- Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Cook Mushrooms and Onions: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and onions and cook for 6–8 minutes until softened and golden brown.
- Make the Roux and Gravy: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring constantly for 1–2 minutes to create a roux. Slowly whisk in beef broth to prevent lumps, then stir in Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the seared patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Let simmer gently for 15–20 minutes until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is thickened.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to enjoy the flavorful gravy.
