Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Food coloring (optional, for colorful cake layers)

Additional:

  • 2 cups M&M’s, plus extra for decorating
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup buttercream frosting (for crumb coat and decorating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease/line three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, starting and ending with dry. Add food coloring if desired.
  5. Bake and Cool: Divide batter between pans, bake for 25-28 minutes, cool cakes completely.
  6. Assemble: Level cakes, cut hole in two layers. Stack layers with M&M filling, frost with buttercream, chill.
  7. Make Ganache: Heat cream, pour over chocolate, stir until smooth. Cool slightly.
  8. Decorate: Pour ganache over cake, top with M&M’s. Chill before serving.
