For the Dumplings:
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
- 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon butter (cut into 8 small pieces)
For the Caramel Sauce:
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare the crust: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper. Roll out the pie crust and cut it into 8 even squares.
- Prepare the apples: Cut each apple into 4 wedges.
- Make the cinnamon sugar mixture: In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Assemble the dumplings: Place one apple wedge on each dough square, sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture, and top each with a small piece of butter. Fold the dough over the apple wedge, pinching to seal and shape into a dumpling.
- Arrange and sauce: Arrange the dumplings in the prepared dish. In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, heavy cream, vanilla, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring until smooth and bubbly. Pour the warm caramel sauce over the dumplings.
- Bake and serve: Brush the tops with egg wash. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- You can use crescent roll dough or puff pastry as an alternative to pie crust.
- For extra indulgence, serve with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of additional caramel sauce.
