For the Cake:
- 3 medium apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- Make the caramel: In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, add brown sugar, and cook until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan.
- Arrange the apples: Place sliced apples on top of the caramel in a circular pattern.
- Prepare the batter: Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and vanilla, then mix in dry ingredients and milk.
- Bake: Spread batter over apples and caramel. Bake for 40-45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Finish: Cool for 10 minutes, invert the cake onto a plate, and remove the pan and parchment. Serve warm or at room temperature.
