Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramel Frosting:
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup whole milk or heavy cream
- 1½ to 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Melt Butter and Brown Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and stir constantly until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 minutes, stirring often.
- Add Milk and Boil: Carefully whisk in the milk and return to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and let cool for 5–10 minutes.
- Finish Frosting: Stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, starting with 1½ cups and adding more as needed until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
- Use: Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies before it sets.
Notes
- If the frosting thickens too much before using, stir in a teaspoon of milk at a time to loosen it.
- For a deeper caramel flavor, use dark brown sugar.
- This frosting sets up with a soft, slightly fudgy texture as it cools.
