Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil.
  2. Add the onions: Add the sliced onions to the skillet, sprinkle with salt, and cook for 10 minutes until softened.
  3. Caramelize the onions: Reduce heat to medium-low and cook the onions for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deep golden brown.
  4. Deglaze the pan: Optionally, sprinkle sugar for faster caramelization. Deglaze with balsamic vinegar or water in the final minutes.
