Description

This Cheddar Soda Bread is a delicious twist on traditional soda bread, packed with sharp cheddar cheese and fresh chives for a savory flavor. It’s perfect for serving alongside soups or stews, or simply enjoyed with a spread of butter.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Additional Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease a cast-iron skillet.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Cheese and Chives: Stir in cheddar cheese and chives if using.
  4. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  5. Combine Ingredients: Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in buttermilk mixture. Stir just until dough comes together.
  6. Knead and Shape: Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead a few times, and shape into a round loaf.
  7. Bake: Place the loaf on the prepared sheet or skillet, cut an “X” on top, and bake for 35-45 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.
