Description

This Cheesesteak Meatloaf Recipe combines the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak into a comforting and hearty meatloaf. Featuring ground beef, sautéed peppers and onions, and a generous amount of provolone cheese, this dish brings the beloved sandwich to your dinner table in a new and delicious form. Perfect for a family meal or special occasion, the meatloaf is baked until juicy and topped with melted provolone for an irresistible finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef, 85% lean
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for gluten-free option)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Additional provolone slices for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature when the meatloaf is ready to bake.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly to prevent cooking the meat prematurely.
  3. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed vegetables, shredded provolone cheese, milk, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Gently mix together with your hands or a spoon until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatloaf tender.
  4. Shape Meatloaf: Shape the meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it in a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan. This helps keep the loaf intact during baking and makes removal easier.
  5. Bake Meatloaf: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Add Cheese Topping: If you prefer a cheesy topping, lay slices of provolone cheese over the meatloaf after the initial 45 minutes of baking. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Make sure the internal temperature of the meatloaf reaches 160°F (71°C) for safety.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, making the meatloaf moist and easier to slice. Serve warm, optionally with sautéed onions and mushrooms to boost the Philly cheesesteak flavor.

Notes

  • For authentic Philly flavor, serve with sautéed onions and mushrooms on the side.
  • You may substitute provolone with mozzarella or American cheese based on preference.
  • To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to ensure a tender meatloaf.
  • Let the meatloaf rest before slicing to lock in the juices.
