Ingredients
Scale
Bread & Butter
- 1 loaf Italian bread
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp garlic salt
Sloppy Joe Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- ¼ cup yellow onion, finely chopped
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ¾ cup ketchup
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ cup water
Cheese & Garnish
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened unsalted butter with garlic salt until well combined. Set aside.
- Toast the Bread: Slice the Italian bread into serving-sized pieces. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice. Toast the bread slices in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Remove from oven and set aside.
- Cook the Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
- Add Onions and Seasonings: Stir in the finely chopped yellow onion, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the onion is softened.
- Add Sauces and Simmer: Mix in the yellow mustard, ketchup, and water. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook on low heat for about 5 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally.
- Assemble the Melts: Spoon the sloppy joe beef mixture evenly over the toasted garlic bread slices. Top each with a mixture of shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese.
- Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled bread slices back into the oven and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and melted.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, sprinkle chopped fresh parsley on top, and serve immediately.
Notes
- You can substitute Italian bread with French bread or sturdy sandwich rolls.
- Adjust the amount of garlic salt to taste, or use fresh minced garlic for more intense flavor.
- Use a blend of cheeses or your favorite melting cheese if preferred.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
- This recipe can be doubled for larger gatherings and freezes well if assembled without baking the cheese.
