Description

This homemade Chicken & Rice recipe for dogs is a nutritious, easy-to-make meal using wholesome ingredients like boneless chicken breast, whole grain brown rice, and optional green beans. It provides a balanced, dog-safe option to supplement your pet’s diet with protein, fiber, and vitamins, all prepared with gentle simmering to preserve flavors and nutrients.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups whole grain brown rice
  • 5 oz boneless chicken breast (fresh or frozen; NEVER give chicken bones to dogs!)
  • 1 cup green beans (optional, fresh or frozen)

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Bring 4 cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat in a large pot.
  2. Add Rice and Protein: Stir in 2 cups of whole grain brown rice into the boiling water. Place the 5 oz boneless chicken breast and 1 cup of green beans on top of the rice without stirring.
  3. Simmer: Cover the pot and reduce heat to low. Let it simmer for 40-50 minutes or until the rice has absorbed all the water and steam holes appear on the surface. Note that whole grain brown rice might take the full 50 minutes depending on the brand, so check accordingly.
  4. Chop and Mix: Once cooked, use kitchen or poultry shears to cut the chicken and vegetables into small bite-sized pieces. Stir everything together thoroughly to combine.
  5. Cool Safely: Transfer the mixture into a container and create a small hole in the center to allow steam to escape. Refrigerate uncovered for 4 hours for proper cooling before covering the container.
  6. Serve: Add two tablespoons of the chicken and rice mixture per cup of your dog’s kibble during meal times. Optionally, add a little warm water to moisten the food, stir, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use whole grain brown rice for better fiber and nutrient content, but if using white rice, the cooking time may be shorter.
  • Never give dogs chicken bones as they can be hazardous.
  • Green beans are optional; choose other dog-safe vegetables such as carrots or peas if desired.
  • Store prepared food in the refrigerator and use within seven days for freshness and safety.
  • The cooling step before covering the container is important for food safety to prevent bacterial growth.
