Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Additional:

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup caramel bits or soft caramels (melted with 2 tablespoons heavy cream)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or grease.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract.
  5. Combine: Gradually mix in dry ingredients, fold in chocolate chips and nuts if using.
  6. Layer and Bake: Spread half of the dough in the pan, pour caramel mixture, top with remaining dough, and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  7. Cool and Serve: Cool completely before cutting into bars.

Notes

  • For easier spreading, lightly wet your hands or spatula when pressing dough over the caramel.
  • You can use store-bought caramel sauce as a substitute for melted caramels.
