For the cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box – usually eggs, oil, and water)
For the cream filling:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (7-ounce) jar marshmallow creme
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (as needed for consistency)
For the chocolate ganache:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare cake pans with parchment paper and nonstick spray. Mix and bake the chocolate cake according to package instructions. Let cakes cool completely.
- Make the cream filling: Beat butter and shortening until fluffy. Add powdered sugar, marshmallow creme, and vanilla. Adjust consistency with milk if needed.
- Assemble the cake: Place one cake layer, spread filling, top with the second layer.
- Prepare the ganache: Heat cream, pour over chocolate chips, stir until smooth. Let cool slightly.
- Finish the cake: Pour ganache over the top of the cake. Chill before slicing.
Notes
- For a richer cake, use hot coffee instead of water in the cake mix.
- The cake can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge for best results.
