Ingredients
Scale
Apples
- 4 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith)
Batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Additional
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for batter)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (for batter)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Wash the apples thoroughly under running water to remove any wax or dirt. Using a sharp knife or an apple corer, carefully remove the core from each apple while keeping the apple intact. Slice each apple into 1/4-inch thick rings. Optionally, sprinkle the slices with lemon juice to prevent browning and set aside.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk the ingredients together until evenly blended.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
- Combine Batter: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently. Avoid overmixing; it’s okay if the batter has a few lumps. Let the batter sit for about 10 minutes to achieve a fluffier texture upon frying.
- Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix together the 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon thoroughly. Set aside for later use.
- Heat Oil for Frying: Pour enough vegetable oil into a large skillet to cover about 1/2 inch of the bottom. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying.
- Batter and Fry Apple Rings: Dip each apple ring into the batter, making sure it is fully coated while allowing any excess batter to drip off. Carefully place the battered apple ring into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and fry the other side for another 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden.
- Drain and Coat: Remove the fried apple ring with a slotted spoon and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. While still warm, toss the apple ring in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat evenly. Repeat this process with the remaining apple rings, frying in batches as needed.
- Serve: Serve the fried cinnamon apple rings warm, either on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
Notes
- To prevent apples from browning while preparing, sprinkle them with lemon juice.
- Maintain the oil temperature at 350°F to ensure even frying and prevent soggy rings.
- Fry apple rings in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can lower the oil temperature.
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the batter and coating.
- Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor; they are best enjoyed warm.
