Main Casserole:

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread (about 1416 oz, cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)

Optional Garnishes:

  • Maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Casserole: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread cubed bread evenly in the dish.
  2. Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, spices, and salt.
  3. Soak the Bread: Pour the custard over the bread cubes, pressing lightly. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  4. Preheat and Top: Preheat oven. Make topping, sprinkle over casserole.
  5. Bake: Bake for 45–50 minutes until set and golden.
  6. Rest and Serve: Let cool, then serve with garnishes.
