Description

Indulge in the comforting flavors of a classic patty melt with this easy-to-follow recipe. Juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese are sandwiched between buttery rye bread slices, creating a deliciously melty and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the Beef Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For Assembly:

  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until caramelized and golden brown. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Beef Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 thin, wide patties, roughly the shape of your bread slices. Cook the patties in the skillet over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side until fully cooked and browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Patty Melts: On the unbuttered side of the rye bread slices, layer 1 slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with a second bread slice, buttered side out. Heat the skillet over medium heat and cook each sandwich for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden and the cheese is melted. Slice in half and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute sourdough or Texas toast for rye bread.
  • Enhance the richness by adding cheddar or American cheese.
  • For a classic diner experience, pair with pickles and crispy fries.
