Description
Indulge in the timeless comfort of a Classic Patty Melt, a delicious diner-style burger sandwiched between slices of rye bread with Swiss cheese and caramelized onions.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties:
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
For the Sandwich:
- 1 large yellow onion (thinly sliced)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (plus more for grilling)
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- Optional Thousand Island or burger sauce for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: Shape the ground beef into 4 thin oval patties slightly larger than your bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook the sliced onions until soft and golden brown, about 15–20 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
- Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Layer Swiss cheese, cooked patty, caramelized onions, more Swiss cheese, and top with another slice of bread (buttered side out).
- Grill the Sandwiches: Grill in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side.
- Serve: Enjoy hot with optional sauce.
Notes
- You can substitute Swiss cheese with American or cheddar for a flavor twist.
- For crispier sandwiches, press them lightly with a spatula while grilling.
