Meat Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup dry red wine
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup whole milk
To Serve:
- 1 pound potato gnocchi
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Meat Sauce: Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Cook onion, carrot, and celery until softened. Add garlic, ground beef, tomato paste, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper. Cook until beef is browned.
- Add Liquid and Simmer: Pour in wine, simmer to reduce. Add crushed tomatoes, simmer for 25–30 minutes. Stir in milk and simmer for 5 more minutes.
- Cook Gnocchi: Cook gnocchi according to package instructions. Add cooked gnocchi to the sauce, toss to coat.
- Serve: Top with Parmesan and herbs if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, simmer the sauce longer (up to an hour).
- Ground pork or a beef-pork mix can be used instead of ground beef.
- Use store-bought or homemade gnocchi.
- To make it creamy, stir in a splash of heavy cream at the end.
