Ingredients
Scale
Onions and Butter
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp sugar (optional)
Dip Base
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Garnish
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add finely chopped onions along with salt, black pepper, and sugar if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely before proceeding.
- Mix dip base: In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Incorporate onions: Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy mixture, mixing thoroughly to evenly distribute the onions.
- Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and the dip to thicken.
- Serve and garnish: Before serving, garnish the dip with chopped fresh chives if desired. Serve chilled with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
Notes
- Caramelizing onions slowly is key to developing the dip’s deep, sweet flavor.
- Using both sour cream and mayonnaise provides a creamy, balanced base.
- Refrigerating the dip helps the flavors meld and improves texture.
- Chives add a fresh pop of color and mild onion flavor but are optional.
