Description

This Crispy Shredded Chilli Beef recipe delivers an incredible combination of crunchy, tender beef with a sticky, spicy sauce. Perfect for those craving a flavorful Chinese-inspired dish that’s easy to make at home and gluten-free when using tamari and gluten-free flour. The dish features crispy fried flank steak coated in a savory, slightly sweet chili sauce with fresh garlic, ginger, and bell peppers, garnished with green onions for a fresh finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Coating

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose gluten-free flour (or regular if not gluten-free)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil for deep frying

Stir-Fry Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for stir-frying)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 red chili, thinly sliced (or to taste)
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 green onion, sliced (for garnish)

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: In a bowl, toss the thinly sliced beef with cornstarch, gluten-free flour, salt, and black pepper until fully and evenly coated.
  2. Deep Fry the Beef: Heat oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the coated beef in batches for about 3 to 4 minutes each until golden and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the beef and drain on paper towels.
  3. Sauté Aromatics and Vegetables: Wipe out the pan and heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced red chili. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the sliced red bell pepper and stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce (or tamari), sweet chili sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, tomato paste, and sesame oil until well combined.
  5. Combine and Cook: Pour the sauce mixture into the pan with the sautéed aromatics and bell pepper. Bring to a simmer, then add the crispy fried beef back into the pan. Toss everything together to coat the beef evenly with the sticky sauce. Cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes to heat through and allow the sauce to thicken and glaze the beef.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat, garnish with sliced green onions, and serve immediately for best crispiness. Ideal served alongside jasmine rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra heat, add crushed red pepper flakes or increase the amount of fresh red chili.
  • Serve with steamed jasmine rice or your favorite noodles for a complete meal.
  • This dish is best enjoyed immediately to maintain the crispy texture of the beef.
  • To make gluten-free, be sure to use tamari sauce and gluten-free flour as noted.
  • Thinly slicing the beef against the grain ensures tenderness and ease of frying.
