Meatballs:

  • 2 pounds frozen or homemade fully cooked meatballs

French Onion Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Additional:

  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until deeply caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Prepare Sauce: Add garlic, cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle flour over onions, stir well, and cook for another minute. Slowly pour in beef broth, add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Cook Meatballs: Transfer meatballs to crock pot, pour onion mixture over them. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 2-3 hours.
  4. Finish: Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over meatballs during last 10 minutes of cooking. Garnish with parsley before serving.
