Description

This Easy Garlic Mashed Potatoes recipe combines tender Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes with buttery garlic to create a creamy, flavorful side dish perfect for any meal. With simple ingredients and straightforward preparation, it’s a comforting classic that’s quick to make and crowd-pleasing.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes & Garlic

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled

Dairy & Seasonings

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup whole milk (more as needed)
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1½ teaspoons salt (plus more for boiling)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Garnish (Optional)

  • Chopped fresh chives or parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes and garlic: Place the peeled and chunked potatoes along with the peeled garlic cloves into a large pot. Cover them with cold water seasoned with salt to enhance the potatoes’ flavor.
  2. Cook until tender: Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook the potatoes and garlic for 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender, meaning they can be easily pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain and mash: Drain the cooked potatoes and garlic well, then return them to the pot. Add unsalted butter, whole milk, sour cream, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Create creamy mashed potatoes: Mash the mixture thoroughly until smooth and creamy. Add additional milk as needed to reach your preferred consistency, ensuring the potatoes remain rich and not dry.
  5. Adjust seasoning and serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and add more salt or pepper if needed. Serve warm, topped with chopped fresh chives or parsley for a fresh garnish if desired.

Notes

  • For extra depth of flavor, roast the garlic cloves before mashing instead of boiling.
  • This recipe can be doubled to serve a larger crowd.
  • Keep mashed potatoes warm in a slow cooker set to low if serving later.
