- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2-3 minutes, until light and creamy.
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on low speed after each addition.
- Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, then increase the mixer to medium-high speed and beat for another 2-3 minutes.
- Add the heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency—smooth, fluffy, and spreadable.
- Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.
Notes
- For extra stability in warm weather, replace half of the butter with vegetable shortening.
- This frosting can be tinted with gel food coloring and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Bring back to room temperature and re-whip before using.
