Description

French Dip Squares are a delicious and hearty appetizer featuring layers of thinly sliced roast beef and melted cheese sandwiched between golden, buttery crescent dough. Baked to perfection and served with warm au jus for dipping, these savory squares bring the classic flavors of a French dip sandwich into an easy-to-share finger food perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough Layer

  • 2 cans (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent dough

For the Filling

  • 1 lb (450g) thinly sliced roast beef (deli-style)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese

For the Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • 1/2 cup au jus (for dipping)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the squares evenly.
  2. Prepare the Bottom Dough Layer: Unroll one can of crescent dough and press it into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, making sure to cover the entire base evenly.
  3. Make the Sauce Mixture: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to blend all flavors well.
  4. Spread the Sauce: Evenly spread the prepared mayonnaise mixture over the crescent dough in the baking dish, covering it completely.
  5. Layer the Roast Beef and Cheese: Arrange the thinly sliced roast beef over the sauce layer, then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and Swiss cheeses on top.
  6. Add the Top Dough Layer: Unroll the second can of crescent dough and place it over the beef and cheese layers. Press down the edges firmly to seal the filling inside.
  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted completely.
  8. Cool and Slice: Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the dish to cool for a few minutes. Then, cut into squares for serving.
  9. Serve: Serve warm alongside a bowl of warm au jus for dipping. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired to add a fresh touch.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms between the meat and cheese layers.
  • Use good quality deli roast beef for the best taste and tenderness.
  • Make sure to seal the edges of the crescent dough well to prevent leakage while baking.
  • The au jus can be homemade or store-bought; warm it before serving for dipping.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated in the oven to maintain crispness.
