Description

Indulge in the delightful combination of sweet caramelized onions, tart apples, and rich cheese with this French Onion and Apple Grilled Cheese recipe. Perfect for a cozy lunch or dinner, this vegetarian sandwich is packed with flavor and gooey melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale

For the caramelized onions:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

For the sandwich:

  • 1 crisp apple (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 4 slices sourdough or country-style bread
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or softened butter (for spreading on bread)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, thyme, and salt. Cook slowly, stirring often, until golden brown and caramelized, about 20 to 25 minutes. Stir in balsamic vinegar and cook for another minute. Remove from heat.
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise or butter on one side of each bread slice. Layer with cheese, caramelized onions, apple slices, and more cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
  3. Grill the sandwiches: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Grill the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • You can substitute Gruyère with provolone or mozzarella.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding a touch of Dijon mustard inside the sandwich.
