For the sandwich:

- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or softened butter (for spreading on bread)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, thyme, and salt. Cook slowly, stirring often, until golden brown and caramelized, about 20 to 25 minutes. Stir in balsamic vinegar and cook for another minute. Remove from heat.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise or butter on one side of each bread slice. Layer with cheese, caramelized onions, apple slices, and more cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
