Scale
Pickle Preparation
- 1 jar (16 oz) dill pickle chips
- 1 cup buttermilk
Breading
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Frying
- Vegetable oil for frying (1 to 2 inches deep)
Serving
- Ranch or dipping sauce (as desired)
Instructions
- Prepare the pickles: Drain the pickle chips thoroughly and pat them dry using paper towels to remove excess moisture. Place the dried pickles into a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them, ensuring they are well coated.
- Mix the batter: In a separate large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir the mixture until the spices are evenly distributed throughout the flour and cornmeal.
- Heat the oil: Pour 1 to 2 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed skillet or deep fryer and heat it to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accurate temperature control to ensure perfect frying.
- Bread the pickles: Remove the pickles from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip back into the bowl. Dredge each pickle chip thoroughly in the flour mixture until fully coated on all sides.
- Fry the pickles: Fry the coated pickle chips in batches, avoiding overcrowding, for 2 to 3 minutes or until they turn a crispy golden brown. Turn them occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- Drain and serve: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried pickles to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve them hot with ranch dressing or your favorite dipping sauce for the perfect snack or appetizer.
Notes
- For an extra crunchy coating, double-dip the pickles by repeating the buttermilk and flour mixture steps before frying.
- You can substitute pickle chips with pickle spears; however, increase the frying time slightly to ensure they cook through.
