Description

Gougères are delightful French cheese puffs made with a savory choux pastry dough mixed with Gruyère cheese, creating a crispy and flavorful appetizer that is perfect for any gathering.

Dough:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Additional Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a saucepan, combine butter, water, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and add flour. Stir until a smooth dough forms. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to a bowl.
  3. Beat in Eggs: Let the dough cool slightly, then beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in Gruyère cheese.
  4. Bake: Drop spoonfuls of dough onto baking sheets. Sprinkle with Parmesan if desired. Bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  5. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy!

  • Gougères are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be frozen and reheated at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until crisp and warm.
