Description

A delicious twist on the classic sloppy joes, these Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joes combine the flavors of a sloppy joe filling with the gooey goodness of a grilled cheese sandwich. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Sandwiches:

  • 8 slices sandwich bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sloppy Joe Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 6–8 minutes. Drain any excess grease. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir well and simmer for 3–5 minutes until thickened, then remove from heat.
  2. Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place 4 slices, butter-side down, on a flat surface. Top each with shredded cheddar, a scoop of the sloppy joe mixture, and more cheddar. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
  3. Cook the Sandwiches: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches 2–3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can use any melty cheese like mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or American.
  • Serve with pickles or chips for a fun twist on a classic comfort food.
  • Leftover filling can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
