Ingredients
Scale
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 oz sliced mushrooms
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup sour cream
Serving
- 2 cups cooked white rice
- Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Base: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened, ensuring not to brown them, to create a flavorful base.
- Sauté Garlic and Mushrooms: Stir in the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms are browned and their moisture has evaporated, about 5–6 minutes, to concentrate their flavor.
- Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess fat to keep the dish from being greasy.
- Season and Thicken: Season the beef mixture with salt, black pepper, and paprika. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the beef and stir thoroughly to coat, which will help thicken the sauce.
- Add Liquids and Simmer: Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly, then add the Worcestershire sauce. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5–7 minutes until it slightly thickens, melding all flavors together.
- Incorporate Sour Cream: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the sour cream until the sauce becomes smooth and creamy. Heat through gently but avoid boiling to keep the sour cream from curdling.
- Serve: Spoon the stroganoff over warm cooked white rice. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, and enjoy your hearty, comforting meal.
Notes
- For a lighter alternative, substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt.
- Use brown rice instead of white rice to increase fiber content.
- Serve with egg noodles instead of rice for a more traditional stroganoff experience.
- Make sure not to boil the sour cream mixture to prevent curdling.
