It’s easy to prepare, requiring minimal ingredients and time, making it perfect for a quick, wholesome treat that satisfies your chocolate cravings without the excess sugar or fat.
Ingredients
Scale
Chocolate
- 8 oz dark or unsweetened chocolate bars (70% to 100% cacao) (226g)
Fruits and Other
- 4 medium apples (peeled, cored, and sliced into medium cubes)
- 1/16 tsp salt (optional)
- 1/4 cup water (for steaming apples)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Peel the apples, remove the seeds and cores, and slice them into medium-sized cubes so they cook evenly.
- Steam the Apples: Place the apple cubes into a small saucepan with 1/4 cup of water. Cover the saucepan and bring the water to a boil over medium heat to start steaming the fruit.
- Cook Until Tender: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and continue steaming the apples for about 20 minutes until they become soft and tender enough for blending.
- Drain Apples: Carefully drain the cooked apples fully to remove excess water, then set them aside for combining with the chocolate.
- Melt the Chocolate: Finely chop the chocolate bars and gently melt them using a microwave in short bursts or via a double boiler on the stovetop to ensure smooth sauce without burning.
- Blend Ingredients: Combine the steamed apples, optional salt, and melted chocolate in a blender, food processor, or with an immersion blender. Blend until the mixture becomes completely smooth and mousse-like in texture.
- Serve and Garnish: Pour the chocolate mousse into serving cups or small glasses. Garnish with your choice of fresh berries, sliced banana, whipped cream, or extra dark chocolate shavings for added flavor and presentation.
- Storage: Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to five days to maintain freshness and texture.
Notes
- Using dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao ensures a rich, antioxidant-packed dessert with less sugar.
- Optional salt enhances the chocolate flavor but can be omitted if preferred.
- Ensure apples are fully steamed and tender for a perfectly smooth mousse.
- Garnishes like fresh fruit or whipped cream add visual appeal and complementary flavors.
- Store mousse in an airtight container to prevent it from absorbing refrigerator odors.
- For a keto variation, substitute apples with low-carb fruits like avocado or use a sugar-free chocolate.
