Ingredients
Scale
Cake:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- powdered sugar or frosting for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a heart-shaped cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Add mix-ins: Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts, if using. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes.
- Cool and decorate: Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Decorate with powdered sugar or frosting as desired.
Notes
- For extra richness, serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- You can substitute walnuts with pecans or omit nuts entirely.
- If you don’t have a heart-shaped pan, use a square pan and cut into heart shapes with a cookie cutter.
