Description

These homemade blueberry sweet rolls are soft, fluffy, and bursting with fresh blueberries and a cinnamon-sugar filling. Perfect for breakfast or a delightful snack, these rolls are baked to golden perfection and topped with a smooth vanilla glaze for extra sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • ¾ cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Filling

  • ¼ cup softened butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, add the melted butter, egg, salt, and the yeast mixture. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  3. Prepare the filling: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  4. Roll the dough: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 10×14-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top, then scatter the blueberries evenly across the surface.
  5. Shape the rolls: Carefully roll the dough tightly into a log starting from one of the long edges. Slice the log into 10-12 equal-sized rolls. Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish, ensuring some space between them. Let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until they turn golden brown and are cooked through.
  7. Make the glaze: While the rolls bake, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Once the rolls are done and still warm, drizzle the glaze over the top before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh or frozen blueberries. If using frozen, do not thaw to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
  • Make sure milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • For extra fluffy rolls, knead the dough well until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the dough during rising times to prevent drying out.
  • Brush the rolls with melted butter right after baking for glossy, soft tops if desired.
