Description

Homemade Krispy Kremes are classic, fluffy, and sweet doughnuts with a soft glaze, made from scratch using yeast dough and deep-fried to golden perfection. This recipe yields light, airy treats with a signature sugary vanilla glaze perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon dry active yeast
  • 8 ounces all-purpose flour (about 1¾ cups)
  • 1½ ounces sugar (about 3 tablespoons)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ounce butter (softened)
  • A dash of salt
  • Oil for frying

Glaze

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons hot water (adjust as needed)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Combine milk and boiling water in a small bowl and let it cool to lukewarm. Stir in yeast and a pinch of sugar, then let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in softened butter until the mixture resembles crumbs. Add beaten egg and the yeast mixture and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape Doughnuts: Punch down the dough, divide into four parts, roll each into ropes, cut into inch-long pieces, and shape these into balls.
  6. Rest Shaped Dough: Place dough balls on a tray, cover, and let them rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Fry Doughnuts: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry doughnuts in batches for approximately 2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Prepare Glaze: Melt butter in a bowl, add confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in hot water until the glaze is smooth and pourable.
  9. Glaze Doughnuts: Dip warm doughnuts into the glaze and place them on a wire rack to set.

Notes

  • Ensure the yeast mixture is foamy to guarantee proper dough rising.
  • Use a thermometer for oil temperature to achieve perfect frying without burning.
  • Adjust the hot water in the glaze for desired thickness.
  • Resting the shaped doughnuts allows them to puff up nicely during frying.
  • Serve fresh for the best taste and texture.
