Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 3 tablespoons boiling water
- 1 teaspoon dry active yeast
- 8 ounces all-purpose flour (about 1¾ cups)
- 1½ ounces sugar (about 3 tablespoons)
- 1 egg
- 1 ounce butter (softened)
- A dash of salt
- Oil for frying
Glaze
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4 tablespoons hot water (adjust as needed)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: Combine milk and boiling water in a small bowl and let it cool to lukewarm. Stir in yeast and a pinch of sugar, then let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in softened butter until the mixture resembles crumbs. Add beaten egg and the yeast mixture and mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Shape Doughnuts: Punch down the dough, divide into four parts, roll each into ropes, cut into inch-long pieces, and shape these into balls.
- Rest Shaped Dough: Place dough balls on a tray, cover, and let them rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Fry Doughnuts: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry doughnuts in batches for approximately 2 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Prepare Glaze: Melt butter in a bowl, add confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in hot water until the glaze is smooth and pourable.
- Glaze Doughnuts: Dip warm doughnuts into the glaze and place them on a wire rack to set.
Notes
- Ensure the yeast mixture is foamy to guarantee proper dough rising.
- Use a thermometer for oil temperature to achieve perfect frying without burning.
- Adjust the hot water in the glaze for desired thickness.
- Resting the shaped doughnuts allows them to puff up nicely during frying.
- Serve fresh for the best taste and texture.
