Indulge in the sweet, citrusy delight of Homemade Orange Sweet Rolls. These soft and fluffy rolls are filled with a zesty orange filling and topped with a fresh orange glaze, making them the perfect treat for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale

For the dough:

  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the filling:

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • â…“ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the melted butter, egg, flour, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead by hand or with a mixer for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Meanwhile, mix the filling by combining softened butter, sugar, and orange zest in a small bowl.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 14×9-inch rectangle.
  7. Spread the filling evenly over the dough.
  8. Roll up tightly from the long side and cut into 9 equal pieces.
  9. Place rolls in a greased 9×9-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest to make the glaze.
  12. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls and serve.

Notes

  • For stronger orange flavor, add a few drops of orange extract to the glaze.
  • These rolls can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight before the second rise—bring to room temp before baking.
