For the filling:
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
- â…“ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- ½ teaspoon orange zest
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the melted butter, egg, flour, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead by hand or with a mixer for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Meanwhile, mix the filling by combining softened butter, sugar, and orange zest in a small bowl.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a 14×9-inch rectangle.
- Spread the filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll up tightly from the long side and cut into 9 equal pieces.
- Place rolls in a greased 9×9-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
- While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest to make the glaze.
- Drizzle glaze over warm rolls and serve.
Notes
- For stronger orange flavor, add a few drops of orange extract to the glaze.
- These rolls can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight before the second rise—bring to room temp before baking.
