Description

A classic Homemade Sloppy Joes recipe that is quick and easy to make, perfect for a flavorful family dinner. This hearty dish features seasoned ground beef in a rich tomato-based sauce, served on toasted buns for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Ground Beef Mixture:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/3 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Additional:

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Instructions

  1. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5–6 minutes. Drain excess grease if needed.
  2. Add Vegetables: Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Prepare Sauce: Reduce heat to low and add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine and simmer for 5–7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Toast Buns: While the filling simmers, toast the buns in a skillet with butter if desired.
  5. Assemble: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom buns, top with the other halves, and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • These also work great as sliders for parties.
