Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- vegetable oil for frying
Beef Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 3/4 cup water
Toppings
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- sour cream for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the warm water while mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead briefly on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes to relax the gluten and make it easier to work with.
- Shape the fry breads: Divide the rested dough into 6 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a thin round shape, about 6 inches in diameter, ensuring even thickness for consistent frying.
- Fry the bread: Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully fry each dough round for 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until puffed and golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Cook the beef filling: In a separate skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if necessary. Add the taco seasoning and 3/4 cup water, then simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef well.
- Assemble the tacos: Place each fry bread on a plate and top with a generous portion of seasoned beef. Add shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, red onion, black olives, and finish with a dollop of sour cream for added creaminess.
- Serve: Serve the Indian Fry Bread Tacos immediately while the bread is warm and crisp to enjoy the perfect combination of textures and flavors.
Notes
- Fry bread can also be topped with beans, salsa, or jalapeños for variety.
- Keep cooked fry breads warm in a low oven (around 200°F) while preparing toppings to maintain their texture.
- Use fresh, high-quality ingredients to enhance the overall flavor of the tacos.
- The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before frying.
