Filling
- 1 lb (450g) cooked ham, finely chopped
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons sweet relish
- 1 tablespoon chopped green onions (optional)
Buns
- 12 cocktail-sized sandwich rolls or slider buns
Instructions
- Prepare the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped ham, shredded cheddar and Swiss cheeses, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, sweet relish, and chopped green onions (if using). Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated into a creamy mixture.
- Slice the Buns: Take the cocktail-sized sandwich rolls or slider buns and slice each in half horizontally to create a top and bottom piece for every sandwich.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Scoop a generous portion of the ham and cheese mixture onto the bottom half of each roll. Then place the top half of the bun over the filling to form a mini sandwich.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place all the filled sandwiches evenly spaced on a baking sheet to prepare for baking.
- Bake the Bites: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the assembled sandwiches for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the buns turn lightly golden and the filling is heated through and slightly melted.
- Serve Warm: Remove the Iowa Party Bites from the oven and serve them warm for the best flavor and texture. Enjoy this savory party snack!
Notes
- These bites can be prepared a few hours ahead and refrigerated before baking.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle a little paprika or black pepper on top before baking.
- If you prefer a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the filling mixture.
- The green onions are optional but add a fresh touch; you can substitute with chives or skip entirely.
- Make sure the buns are fresh to avoid sogginess after baking.
