- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt

- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
- 1 cup raisins or currants (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar if using.
- Add Butter: Work cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in Extras: Add raisins or currants if using.
- Add Buttermilk: Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead gently, shape into a loaf.
- Bake: Place loaf on baking sheet, cut an “X” on top, bake for 35-45 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
