Description

Ingredients

Lasagna Noodles:

    12 lasagna noodles

Meat Sauce:

    1 pound ground beef, ½ pound Italian sausage, 1 medium onion (chopped), 3 cloves garlic (minced), 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes, 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, ½ cup red wine (optional), 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional), 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt and pepper to taste

Cheese Mixture:

    15 ounces ricotta cheese, 1 large egg, ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Garnish:

    Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook Noodles: Cook lasagna noodles until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare Meat Sauce: Sauté onion, garlic, ground beef, and sausage. Add tomatoes, sauce, paste, wine, seasonings, and simmer.
  4. Mix Cheese: Combine ricotta, egg, and Parmesan in a bowl.
  5. Assemble: Layer sauce, noodles, cheese mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella in a greased baking dish. Repeat layers.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden.
  7. Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

  • For extra richness, consider adding a béchamel layer in addition to the ricotta.
  • This dish can be prepared a day in advance and baked just before serving.
