Description
A classic diner-style Patty Melt featuring juicy ground beef patties, caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and a tangy secret sauce, all grilled between slices of rye bread for a deliciously satisfying sandwich.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melts
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices rye bread
- 1 cup yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Secret Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp pickle relish
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a medium bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape the mixture into two thin, wide patties roughly the size and shape of the rye bread slices to ensure an even fit.
- Caramelize Onions: Heat oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn deeply golden and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes. Once done, remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium heat for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked through.
- Make the Secret Sauce: While the patties cook, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and pickle relish in a small bowl. Mix until smooth and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread the secret sauce on one side of each slice of rye bread. Layer a slice of Swiss cheese, a generous amount of caramelized onions, a cooked beef patty, and another slice of Swiss cheese on two of the bread slices. Top with the remaining bread slices, sauce side down.
- Grill the Patty Melts: Heat the skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches on it and cook for about 2–3 minutes per side, pressing down lightly with a spatula to ensure crispiness, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve: Remove from heat and serve the patty melts hot for the best flavor experience.
Notes
- You can substitute Swiss cheese with cheddar or American cheese for a different flavor profile.
- Add a few dashes of hot sauce to the secret sauce if you prefer a spicy kick.
- For extra crispy sandwiches, press down gently with a spatula while grilling.
