Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Wet Ingredients
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 2 tbsp natural peanut butter (avoid any peanut butter that contains the sweetener Xylitol)
Additional
- Water (as needed, about 1 tablespoon)
- Grease or cooking spray for baking sheet
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the dog treats.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine eggs, cinnamon, pumpkin, whole wheat flour, salt, and peanut butter. Initially, the mixture will be stiff, dry, and crumbly.
- Moisten Dough: Gradually add water, about a tablespoon at a time, to moisten the mixture. Knead the dough as you add water until it reaches a dry and thick but workable consistency.
- Roll Out Dough: Flour your countertop and roll the dough out to about ½ inch thickness. This ensures even baking and a good texture.
- Cut Treats: Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes for the dog treats. Place them on a greased baking sheet, leaving minimal space between as they don’t rise significantly.
- Reuse Leftover Dough: Gather leftover dough, quickly knead and roll it out again to maximize the number of treats you can make.
- Bake: Bake the treats in the preheated oven for approximately 35 minutes or until the treats are hard and crisp.
- Cool & Serve: Let the treats cool completely before serving to your dog to ensure they are safe to eat.
Notes
- Use natural peanut butter without Xylitol, as this sweetener is toxic to dogs.
- Store treats in an airtight container and use within one to two weeks to maintain freshness.
- Add a little water slowly to avoid making the dough too wet.
- Adjust thickness and size of treats based on your dog’s preference and size.
