Description

Rotel Hanky Panky is a quick and delicious appetizer featuring savory sausage, creamy Velveeta cheese, and zesty diced tomatoes with green chilies served on toasted Hawaiian rolls. This crowd-pleasing recipe combines bold flavors and gooey cheese, perfect for parties or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb sausage
  • 1 (8-oz) package Velveeta cheese, cubed
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 (10-oz) can Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained well
  • 1 (12-oz) package Hawaiian rolls

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400ºF (204ºC) to prepare for toasting and baking the rolls.
  2. Toast Rolls: Slice each Hawaiian roll into four slices. Arrange the bread pieces on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes until lightly toasted. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook Sausage Mixture: In a large skillet, cook the pork sausage over medium-high heat until it is browned, crumbly, and no longer pink. Drain off the excess fat carefully.
  4. Add Flavorings: To the cooked sausage, add Worcestershire sauce, the drained can of Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies, and the cubed Velveeta cheese. Stir everything just until combined and the cheese starts to melt.
  5. Assemble Toasts: Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over each toasted bread slice. At this stage, the assembled toasts can be frozen for later use if desired.
  6. Bake Final Toasts: Place the topped toasts back into the oven and bake for an additional 10 to 12 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • Drain the Rotel tomatoes well to prevent soggy bread.
  • You can substitute pork sausage with turkey or chicken sausage for a leaner option.
  • Freezing the assembled toasts before baking makes it a convenient make-ahead appetizer.
  • Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
  • Use Hawaiian rolls for their sweet and soft texture which complements the savory topping perfectly.
