For the meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 small onion finely grated
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil for frying
For the gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup mushrooms sliced (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Shape into small meatballs.
- Cook the meatballs: Brown meatballs in olive oil, then set aside.
- Make the gravy: In the same skillet, make a roux with butter and flour. Gradually add beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, spices, and mushrooms. Simmer until thickened.
- Finish the dish: Return meatballs to the skillet, simmer until cooked through and coated in gravy. Serve over starch of choice.
