Ingredients
Scale
Apple Slices
- 6 Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced into 1/4-inch thick rounds
Batter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying & Topping
- Vegetable oil, for frying (about 1 inch in the skillet)
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce, store-bought or homemade
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut, toasted
- 1/4 cup chocolate syrup, store-bought or homemade
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Apples: Core the Granny Smith apples and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds, ensuring uniform thickness for even cooking.
- Make Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate small bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
- Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently whisk until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the batter light and adjust the consistency with a little more milk or flour if necessary.
- Heat Oil: Add about 1 inch of vegetable oil to a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or pot. Heat it over medium heat until the oil reaches 350°F (175°C), suitable for frying.
- Fry Apples: Dip each apple slice into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off, then carefully place them in the hot oil. Fry the slices in batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and tender.
- Drain: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried apple slices and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil, keeping them crispy.
- Assemble: While the apple slices are still warm, drizzle each with caramel sauce. Then sprinkle toasted shredded coconut on top, pressing lightly to make the coconut adhere.
- Drizzle Chocolate: Drizzle chocolate syrup over the top of the caramel and coconut-covered apple slices for added richness.
- Salt (Optional): For a flavor contrast, lightly sprinkle a pinch of coarse sea salt over the finished apple slices.
- Serve: Serve immediately while warm to enjoy the best texture and flavors.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for tartness that balances the sweetness of the toppings.
- Make sure the oil is at the correct temperature to prevent greasy apple slices.
- Use fresh toasted coconut or toast shredded coconut in a dry pan until golden and fragrant for best flavor.
- The coarse sea salt adds a lovely contrast but can be omitted if you prefer sweeter flavors only.
- Serve this dessert warm for the best taste and texture experience.
