- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/4 teaspoon dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
For serving:
- 12 oz wide egg noodles, cooked according to package instructions
- Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into 1-inch meatballs.
- Brown the meatballs: Brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through. Set aside.
- Make the sauce: In the same skillet, caramelize onions, add flour, broth, cream, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer with meatballs.
- Finish and serve: Top meatballs with cheese, cover until melted. Serve over cooked egg noodles, garnish with parsley.
Notes
- For extra flavor, deglaze the caramelized onions with a splash of white wine before adding broth.
- You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
