Ingredients

Scale

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/4 teaspoon dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese

For serving:

  • 12 oz wide egg noodles, cooked according to package instructions
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Brown the meatballs: Brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through. Set aside.
  3. Make the sauce: In the same skillet, caramelize onions, add flour, broth, cream, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer with meatballs.
  4. Finish and serve: Top meatballs with cheese, cover until melted. Serve over cooked egg noodles, garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, deglaze the caramelized onions with a splash of white wine before adding broth.
  • You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
