Potato Layers:

  • 4 large russet potatoes thinly sliced

Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small yellow onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Garnish:

  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Make Sauce: Melt butter, sauté onion and garlic, add flour, then milk. Stir in cheeses, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, pour half of the cheese sauce, then repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, then uncover and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  5. Serve: Let it rest for 10 minutes before garnishing with parsley and serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes can be used for a creamier texture.
