Potato Layers:
- 4 large russet potatoes thinly sliced
Cheese Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 small yellow onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Garnish:
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Make Sauce: Melt butter, sauté onion and garlic, add flour, then milk. Stir in cheeses, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Layer Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, pour half of the cheese sauce, then repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, then uncover and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Serve: Let it rest for 10 minutes before garnishing with parsley and serving.
Notes
- For extra richness, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
- Yukon Gold potatoes can be used for a creamier texture.
